Health and Beauty Aids

This emerging new market for biotechnology-based ingredients for the health and beauty aid industries has an estimated market potential of $500 million to $1.0 billion dollar market over the next five to ten years.

In Asian countries, enzymes have been used for years as digestive aids. The use of enzymes for digesting roughage and as digestive aids for people with lactose intolerance was also introduced to North America and the world markets in the last decade. Many enzymes such as dextranase possess antimicrobial properties, leading to their use in products such as chewing gums, and in toothpaste as an anti-cavity agent and to reduce dental plaque accumulation. Catalase enzymes are used in contact lens cleaning solutions to remove residual hydrogen peroxide and other debris harmful to the eyes. The enzyme superoxide dismutase is already used in many eye care products.

These enzyme products represent just a few of many new products in the R&D pipeline, waiting to be launched to improve human health. The industry has recognized the health-enhancing potential of enzymes, resulting in campaigns to screen plants, marine animals and land animals to find sources of new health and beauty aid products and ingredients.

Work is underway at many companies to use proteases, lipases, amylases and other classes of enzymes for skin, hair and oral care products. In fact, the first new enzyme products for treating wrinkles, skin softening, dead skin removal, mouth wash, tooth whitening, toothpaste, hair shampoo, hair coloring and hair washing use are expected to be launched within the next 3-5 years.
