The Tree of Life

Dyadic’s gene discovery platform utilizes the proprietary C1 Fungal High-Throughput Robotic Screening (HTRS). system, working with the eukaryotic host organism Chrysosporium lucknowense, or C1. Dyadic’s technology is the only gene discovery platform by which eukaryotic genes – the genes from complex organisms – can be discovered and converted into biologically active proteins utilizing robotics.

Traditionally, prokaryotic organisms – simple life forms such as bacteria – have been used for gene discovery primarily because of their ease of use, and the ability of such organisms to be readily cultivated in the low-volume liquid cultures used in robotic screening. However, using prokaryotes for the screening process limits discovery to the genes of other prokaryotes.

This is because eukaryotic genes often contain interrupting sequences – or introns – and their corresponding protein products are often glycosylated, with sugar molecules attached to their structures. Bacteria are unable to splice introns from genes, and they are not able to attach sugar molecules to proteins. Dyadic, however, has overcome these obstacles to gene discovery through the development of its eukaryotic C1 technology. This integrated technology platform enables the screening of DNA from eukaryotic organisms, as well as the conversion of genomic DNA into functional proteins in a high-throughput robotic format.

By using a eukaryote as the discovery organism for the detection of genes from the earth’s entire gene pool, researchers can now access the entire spectrum of biodiversity. By using C1, Dyadic has created a rapid and efficient system to discover a multitude of useful genes and gene products.
