Phosphates in multiple forms – either as minerals or as phosphorus found in grains, cereals and vegetables – have been added to animal feed to provide animals with the minerals required to promote growth. However, the digestive tracts of animals are poor receptors of phosphate- and phosphorus-supplemented diets, resulting in excessive amounts of phosphate in the animals’ excrement.

The excessive amount of phosphates has been shown in numerous studies to have a detrimental effect on the environment. In many European jurisdictions, the addition of phosphate, meat and bone meal to animal feed has been banned, eliminating crucial sources of phosphorus from animals’ diets.

The inclusion of the enzyme phytase in animal feed releases the natural phosphorus in grains and cereals, making it available to the animal and reducing the impact of undigested phosphorus that passes through the digestive tract.

Studies have shown a reduction of up to 30% in the phosphorus evels found in pig manure when phytase is added to animal feed. Results like this have greatly expanded the need for phytase. It is estimated that this single enzyme may account for up to 70% of the animal feed enzyme market in the near future, with 20% growth per annum achievable.

Dyadic expects to utilize its Integrated C1 technology platform, to discover, develop and manufacture a novel phytase enzyme. When used as an additive in animal feed applications, this enzyme will allow for higher utilization of phytic acid phosphates in the feed, thereby increasing its nutritional value and reducing the detrimental effect of phosphorous run-off within the environment.

Enzymes can be manufactured for commercial purposes in order to control many vital functions, such as increasing the reaction rate of biochemical processes. Each enzyme has a highly specific target, breaking down or synthesizing certain compounds, and operating under specific temperature, pH and pressure.

Dyadic is developing an integrated technology platform for rapidly identifying, developing and manufacturing new enzymes for use in diverse applications (More at Technology Platform.) Dyadic’s biological systems provide the company with a novel approach to rapidly sort through and discover, develop and produce useful enzymes from the vast pool of eukaryotic DNA which makes up 90% of our planet’s biodiversity. For example, fungi and bacteria naturally produce millions of enzymes that all have the potential to solve tomorrow’s industrial problems. Dyadic’s world-class integrated C1 technology platform provides a competitive advantage to rapidly find, refine and produce any given enzyme that customers need.

Utilizing its proprietary technology, Dyadic has manufactured and sold enzymes for the textiles, animal feed, pulp and paper, and food and beverage industries since 1994. Dyadic's global market reach and manufacturing capabilities enable it to market and sell over 50 products to customers in more than 35 countries.

Using proprietary automated screening technologies (More at Robotic Screening), Dyadic expects to be able to rapidly find a wider variety of enzymes than its competitors.

Dyadic's unique capabilities enable it to address the demand for new enzyme activities for specialty applications. A number of applications within the enzyme market provide Dyadic with commercial opportunities for which the company is currently developing a variety of enzymes.

Dyadic believes its systems overcome the limitations of the existing techniques of gene discovery and product development, which are limited in their ability to efficiently access the full spectrum of biodiversity. Dyadic’s systems also virtually ensure that any useful gene that is discovered can also be expressed (translate the genetic code or information into the intended protein or biomolecule), and the expressed protein can then be mass-produced.

Dyadic continues to rapidly improve its core competencies to further accelerate its product offerings within the $1.8 billion enzyme market.
